Social Orbit Padel Platform: Real-Time Matchmaking & Court Booking

How Rally engineered a cross-platform mobile community app using React Native, D3.js orbit physics, and atomic PostgreSQL reservations to connect thousands of padel players with zero scheduling conflicts.

Background

Padel has exploded as one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. However, the player experience remained deeply fragmented. Players organized matches across chaotic WhatsApp groups, frequently suffered from mismatched skill ratings (e.g., beginners unintentionally paired with tournament-level players), and clubs struggled with unfilled courts during off-peak hours.

We partnered with Rally to architect an end-to-end Mobile Community & High-Concurrency Court Reservation Platform. Built on React Native and Supabase, the app combines an interactive D3.js orbit matchmaking graph with a transactional booking engine that prevents double-booking.

The Racket Sport Community Bottleneck

Building a vibrant sports marketplace required solving complex matchmaking, UI physics, and transactional scheduling challenges:

Disorganized Player Matchmaking

WhatsApp groups failed to connect players with matching skill levels, leading to one-sided games and poor player retention.

Court Double-Booking Conflicts

Concurrent bookings during peak evening hours caused overlapping reservations and frustrating disputes at venue check-in desks.

Complex RTL Localization

Supporting dual-language requirements (Hebrew/English) necessitated complete Right-to-Left UI mirroring and localized layout dynamics.

Friction in Split Payments

Chasing three other players for cash or manual bank transfers caused payment delays and administrative headaches for match organizers.

The Solution: Social Orbit Matchmaking & Atomic Booking

We engineered a dynamic mobile ecosystem that balances engaging social visualization with strict transactional integrity.

Phase 1: Dynamic D3 Orbit Matchmaking & Skill Tiering

Replaced generic search lists with an interactive concentric orbit visualization centered on the user.

  • Concentric D3 Orbit Physics: Utilizes deterministic radial jitter algorithms to position available players on concentric rings corresponding to distance, schedule availability, and skill alignment.
  • Granular 1.0 to 7.0 Skill Tier Assessment: A comprehensive 13-stage technical assessment questionnaire accurately benchmarks player ratings to ensure balanced, competitive games.
  • Right-to-Left (RTL) Localization: Native bilingual support with full Right-to-Left (Hebrew) layout mirroring and fluid typography.

Phase 2: Atomic Court Reservation & In-App Digital Wallet

Eliminates double-booking and payment disputes through database-enforced reservation locking.

  • Atomic Slot Locking: Transactional database routines reserve target court slots for 5 minutes during checkout, preventing concurrent users from taking the same court.
  • Split Payments & Digital Credits Wallet: Match organizers can instantly split court fees among 4 players or redeem club package credits seamlessly.
